Despite two study results to the contrary (the hazardous substances named by the EFSA could not be detected either in the smoke or on smoked products) and clear objections from an ecological, sustainable and economic perspective by several member states, the responsible committee followed the EU’s risk management, which has no relevance whatsoever for the CleanSmoke smoking process.

Analysis of Smoked Products for Hazardous Substances

Our own analysis of smoked products
prove that the EFSA’s risk assessment
for primary smoked products was inadequate.
In its risk management, DG Santé should therefore
suspend the planned non-renewal of
smoke flavourings and instruct EFSA
not to analyse solids individually, but
analyse the smoke and the smoked products
for hazardous substances.

Statement BÖLW on the CleanSmoke smoking process

This year’s participation of the CleanSmoke Coalition at Biofach was characterised by the regular renewal of primary smoke products by EFSA/DG Sante. Organic and conventional processors are clearly against a non-renewal of the product and environmentally friendly smoking process.

Renewal of primary smoke products

Purified primary smoke products are used in the CleanSmoke smoking process. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently recommended to the EU Commission that their authorisation should not be extended, due to a scientifically inadequate single substance analysis – this would mean the end of the product and environmentally friendly smoking process.

BIOFACH 2023

For the second time, the world’s leading organic trade fair BIOFACH in Nuremberg will feature “Green smoke for healthier and more environmentally friendly products”. From February 14th to 17th, the CleanSmoke Coalition will inform interested manufacturers and processors from the entire food industry in hall 5 booth 5-441 about the smoking process with pre-purified smoke – which is now equally permitted for organic and conventional products.

CleanSmoke in Italy

After BioFach, the CleanSmoke Organic Campaign was represented at the Italian organic trade fair SANA in Bologna. The producers’ association AssoBio, the certifier Suolo e Salute and the Organic Department of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture were the most important discussion partners.
