Clean Smoke
Clean Taste
and Environment Protection
makes smoke future-proof
Purified smoke for a conscious, healthy and sustainable diet. Product and environmentally friendly smoking without ashes, tar and PAHs.
Non-renewal of primary smoke products
Despite two study results to the contrary (the hazardous substances named by the EFSA could not be detected either in the smoke or on smoked products) and clear objections from an ecological, sustainable and economic perspective by several member states, the responsible committee followed the EU’s risk management, which has no relevance whatsoever for the CleanSmoke smoking process.
Analysis of Smoked Products for Hazardous Substances
Our own analysis of smoked products
prove that the EFSA’s risk assessment
for primary smoked products was inadequate.
In its risk management, DG Santé should therefore
suspend the planned non-renewal of
smoke flavourings and instruct EFSA
not to analyse solids individually, but
analyse the smoke and the smoked products
for hazardous substances.
CleanSmoke Newsletter April 2024
Due to current events we publish here the CleanSmoke Newsletter April 2024 – the DG Santé will decide in April 2024 on the non-renewal of primary smoking products. A non-renewal means the end for the product- and environmentally friendly smoking process.
Statement BÖLW on the CleanSmoke smoking process
This year’s participation of the CleanSmoke Coalition at Biofach was characterised by the regular renewal of primary smoke products by EFSA/DG Sante. Organic and conventional processors are clearly against a non-renewal of the product and environmentally friendly smoking process.
Details in the attached statement of the German Federation of the Organic Food Industry.
Renewal of primary smoke products
Purified primary smoke products are used in the CleanSmoke smoking process. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has recently recommended to the EU Commission that their authorisation should not be extended, due to a scientifically inadequate single substance analysis – this would mean the end of the product and environmentally friendly smoking process.

BIOFACH 2023
For the second time, the world’s leading organic trade fair BIOFACH in Nuremberg will feature “Green smoke for healthier and more environmentally friendly products”. From February 14th to 17th, the CleanSmoke Coalition will inform interested manufacturers and processors from the entire food industry in hall 5 booth 5-441 about the smoking process with pre-purified smoke – which is now equally permitted for organic and conventional products.
Smoking process with pre-purified smoke is “organic-compliant“
Already since the end of 2021, the CleanSmoke smoking process is compatible with the conventional smoking process approved for organic products – but offers immense advantages for people, nature and environment

Smoking process with pre-purified smoke for organic products
After long discussions, supported by EGTOP,
the EU Agriculture Commission has confirmed that
a smoking process with pre-purified smoke
due to the comparability with conventional ones
must also be permitted for organic products.
Good Manufacturing Practice
Although the product and environmentally friendly smoking process with pre-purified smoke in a closed circle complies with the “Good Manufacturing Practice” required by the EU organic regulation, it is not approved for organic products at state level.
