CleanSmoke – matured, smoked root vegetables as a plant-based meat alternative

More and more consumers are turning to plant-based meat substitutes – good for them and good for the environment. The young Frankfurt based start-up Verrano uses Bioland-certified beetroot, celery and turnips in a special maturing process and consistently relies on the product- and environmentally-friendly CleanSmoke smoking process.

Meat consumption across Europe has fallen by 5.1% compared to the previous year, in Germany by as much as 8.1%. The EU Commission has identified customer concerns about climate change as the main reason for the falling demand for meat. Population and age trends, increased attention to animal welfare and the rejection of industrialised factory farming. And, of course, the trend towards plant-based substitute products is also having a demonstrable impact.

In addition to many products containing seitan, tofu or artificial meat, the young start-up Verrano has selected regional, often forgotten types of vegetables – Verrano speaks of root vegetables in delicatessen quality, thinly sliced or diced, now available in the first refrigerated counters or for the catering trade.
